How to ruin a CRM email

Modern Toss

Modern Toss is a very funny and quite profane brand. They’re basically cartoonists who comment on modern life, in a devastatingly honest way. I look forward to receiving their newsletters, as they stand out from the bland words most brands employ. When we were thinking about how to ruin a CRM email, we looked at them and thought f*** it.

Because let’s admit it: swearing is funny.

One of their recent newsletters used a very simple and eye-catching subject line: Fancy a drink?

As you can see, there’s a signature cartoon that makes a very witty comment on the modern media landscape. The drink gag typically at first appears to have no relation to the main thrust of the newsletter. But this randomness is part of the appeal.

It turns out that the cartoon is part of the brand’s new card range, and this email exists to perform the very simple job of promoting it, as well as Modern Toss’s book range.

The copy reads like this:CRM email 5 Modern Toss

Short and not so sweet, isn’t it?

We set ourselves an interesting challenge (well, interesting to word nerds like us.) What if Modern Toss sounded formal and straight like everyone else?

How could you (in Modern Toss’s language) f*ck this email up?

There you go, we’ve ruined a CRM email.

It may now read like a many a modern email, but it’s toss.
